Welcome to the Bondi Writers website.

The Bondi Writers’ Group (Bondi Writers) began September 2004 in the Seagull Room at the Bondi Pavilion.

We formed under the banner of The Fellowship of Australian Writers and are the official Eastern Suburbs group.

We are a group of local writers, both amateur and professional, who have diverse interests in writing. We come together once a month to be inspired by people who have travelled the writing road. We are a support-base for each other as well as providing an exchange of information and ideas.

Each month over the past year we have had a guest speaker, either a published author, a person from inside the industry, or a writing teacher. We also have meetings on our own, to share writing and stories and have a social time together.

We currently ask for a donation each meeting to go towards costs. For members we ask $2, and for non members $5.

We publish news about ourselves in the FAW bi-monthly newsletter WRITER’S VOICE. We have had articles published about us in local press.

LATEST NEWS

The next meeting of the Bondi Writers’ Group will be on Sunday November 16, 2008 at the Waverley Library, 32-48 Denison Street, Bondi Junction.

We meet upstairs in the Theory Room from 2 to 4pm.

This month the widely-published and acclaimed poet, Dawn Bruce, will facilitate a free verse workshop. Dawn plans to do a general fun exercise regarding types of poets as a lead in activity, then go on to two exercises which have proved popular using 'masks' as a topic and 'hands'. There will be concentration on images and the senses in these exercises. She will also lead the group into using unusual descriptions and words in writing, which can be used either in prose or poetry.

This workshop should be a fascinating one and not to be missed.

The workshop will be followed by afternoon tea in the Friends’ Room.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Best wishes,

Cynthia

IN MEMORIAM
Bondi Writers' Group members were saddened to learn of Pat Skinner's sudden death on 18 August 2008, less than a week after being diagnosed with cancer.

She was Editorial Assistant of Southerly literary journal and an experienced copyeditor/proofreader.

Pat’s first novel, Brolga, was published in 2006. She also had two short fiction collections published, Bonding with Boofy (2000) and Spirit of the Rose (2002), nearly eighty individual short fiction pieces and several poems.

She received a Booranga Writers’ Fellowship in 2001 and an Australia Council grant in 2003. Pat, a long-time member of the group, was totally committed to her own writing, and was without fail a kind, generous and helpful supporter of numerous other writers.

Friend Debra Adelaide informed the group that the last issue of Southerly that Pat was working on is a special issue on the short story (vol 68 no 3) edited by Debra and John Dale. It is now dedicated to Pat, who worked for Southerly for nearly 15 years, and one of her stories is included in it. The issue will be called Little Disturbances, and will be published in November.
